Genre specific- UNWIND short film

This short film explores the idea of the answer for abortion. Instead of aborting a child the parents will sign a contract that allows the child to grow up in camps until the ages of 16, 17 or 18 when the process called the unwinding begins which involves the child's organs to get harvested to be used at a later date by their parents. The short film captures the unwinding or a teenage girl. I would say that this film is both part of the sci-fi and drama genres, due to the storyline relating to modern day problems and how it is set in the future.

One aspect of mise-en-scene which helps the audience understand that it is part of the drama genre is the sound. What I mean by this is that within stereotypical drama films you find the reoccurrence of certain sounds for example the beating of someones heart or their breath. In this case it is a heart machine which is introduced at the start when the message about the storyline explains to the audience what it is about. With this sound being introduced without any correlating images the audience is being kept on the edge because they know what the sound is but they don't know what footage is supposed to go with it leading them to question what is going to happen. This sound is played right through the short film which adds to the atmosphere of the film. This sound implies that t is part of the drama genre because it implies that something is going to happen and that reoccurring sounds is a common convention of the drama genre. Another way that sound is used to infer that this short film is a drama genre is the fact that it has quiet music playing under the footage, what I mean by under the footage is that the sound from the scenes can still be heard and the music is in the background of the film. When researching the drama genre I found that little or no music was a common convention of the genre allowing me to identify this film as a drama. With the use of this non-diegetic sound the audience is made aware that this short film is a drama.

Another way that the producers of this short film has made the audience aware that this is a drama film is thought the use of camerawork which is also another aspect of mine-en-scene. The camera shots which you see a lot of during this short film are close-ups and point of views. When investigation the drama genre I found that both of these camera shots are very common within media products which explore the drama genre. The point of view shots make the audience experience what the character might be going through which creates suspense and keeps the audience on edge, due to this short film exploring a emotional and personal procedure it also highlights the emotions that are captured within the scenes. The close up shot is used throughout the majority of the film, there are no shots that establish the setting which explains why the other aspect of mise-en-scene like costume, sound, and lighting are emphasised and are so important. With the close up shots the audience is shown their emotions. Another familiar shot that you notice throughout the whole film is the close up of the teenagers eyes, this shot ,because it is used so often is made very important because apart from her hand that is the only part that you get to see of her which makes the scene very dramatic because eyes are seen as very expressive and therefore dramatic. Due to these shots I think the this short film is part of the drama genre.

One other aspect of mine-en-scene which is important to making the audience aware that it is a drama film is lighting. Within this short film the lighting used is very bright and highlights everything, the use of this makes it so the setting and the surroundings are highlighted. Another thing that is highlighted is the emotions on the characters faces. Emotions are very important in a drama film because in order for the film to be dramatic it needs emotion. The bright light also conforms to the location in which the film is set, the light is also used to create emphasis on the location because there are no establishing shots being used to highlight it. The light that is also used effectively is the doctors like which is situated behind the doctor, this could infer that the doctor is angle like but because you see that light flashing onto the camera and therefore into the characters face it could be implies that the doctor isn't seen as good and in fact is inflicting metal pain. The doctor goes against the stereotypical conventions of a doctor but then again is seen as helping people, this conflict creates drama within the film.

When looking at this short film the audience isn't shown the setting but they can infer from the combination of the props, costumes and sounds that it is in a opposition room. When you think of a hospital you immediately think of good things and people saving lives and getting better, in this case the doctors are in fact killing someone which is naturally against what they do this creates a conflict because they are going against the stereotype. This then creates drama because it is going against what we expect and what is right.

Editing is also used to emphasise the dramatic aspect of the short film, you can tell this by the use of out of focus shots which can be seen when looking through the eyes of the teenager. These shots have been edited to look like this to create the ida of the girl being disorientated and therefore creates the suspense that something is going to happen to her because she literally isn't seeing clearly. The idea that she is going to die is seen as something which is very dramatic and therefore links to the drama genre.

Costumes and props are the last aspects of mine-en-scene which helps convince the audience that the film is part of the drama genre. They do this by helping to set the scene, what I mean by this is that the props and costumes that are used add to the suspense of the location which in this case is a hospital. Another stereotype of the drama genre is that they are typically set in places like schools and workplaces. In this case the hospital is a workplace, you can see hospitals used in TV series like Greys Anatomy which is a drama series. The one thing that I find really effective which is part of the doctors costume is the mask, why I find this effective is because it makes it so that the audience can only see the doctors eyes which creates a connection to the patient. It also highlights their importance within the short film, this links to the end of the film when the patient loses her eyes and the footage disappears and the sound is left, by the over emphasise on the eye it s implied that something might happen at the end which it does this makes it more of a dramatic piece.
