Rough footage- location 4

Image
For this location I focussed on filming his expression and reactions to the situation. Thats why I included close up shots of his face. Also by having a normal morning routine i am able to highlight the differences between the two. I shot a lot of the same footage but changed them by using different camera angles, I thought by doing this I am able to have a wider choice when it comes to editing the footage.

Rough footage- location 2

For my second location I wanted to use the hall which can be seen when Charlie goes downstairs. Compared to the other locations this location makes up the least amount of time due to the character only having to walk down the stairs. This footage was also filmed on day 1 of filming.

Rough footage- location 1

Image
This is the footage that I filmed on day 1 of my filming days and which were only located in the first location which was in Charlie's bedroom. I followed my storyboard but I also added shots which I thought at the time would be very effective, I thought that I would rather have more footage that I didn't necessarily need then not enough and then I would have to re-film. These shots consist of the part of the short film that explores Charlie waking up and getting ready for his day, I wanted to focus on his surroundings as well as his routine. I thought this would be effective because then the audience is getting introduced to the character a little bit at a time which results in it being dramatic which is my chosen genre for my media product.

Location changes

Image
I had to make changes to the location in order for it to look the way i wanted it to look, for example I wanted the kitchen to be moderately tidy. I also wanted it to look very organised. The things i had to change were the front of the fridge, the kitchen surfaces and i also decided to introduce shelves which were clearly labelled that they were for Charlie. For the fridge i removed all of the magnets, the reason why i chose to do this was because stereotypically people with autism like to be very organised whether this involves either patterns or just cleanliness. Removing all of the magnets allowed the fridge to look clean therefore relating to the idea of autism and how it changes things. I completely tidied the kitchen limiting the amount of stuff that was on the surfaces therefore emphasising the organisation that is needed. I still wanted to create the idea of a family kitchen to highlight the idea that families that are effected by autism arn't any different from other...

Filming day- location 2

Image
When filming in my second location I had to move the lighting down stairs so I would be able to capture Charlie coming down the stairs. The cables from the lights became a major tripping hazard here because I had to use several extension leads and the hall was narrow so there wasn't a lot of room for me to make adjustments. I warned the actors about this hazard, even though the hazard would have effected me more because it was behind the camera. I had the light facing up to the ceiling so it would be able to bounce off of it creating a soft lighting effect, I also decided to turn the ceiling light to add typical light that would be found in the house. For all of the shots that were filmed in this location I kept the light in this position because the shots ran one after another and didn't involve me moving the camera too much therefore the lights wouldn't need to be moved. Because less time was spent in this area the heat from the lights didn't effect the camera which...

Filming days- location 1

Image
When filming I had to add lighting to the location because I decided to close the blind therefor there was limited natural light in the room. When filming the point of view shots I first tried to film it instead of getting the actor to do it. One thing I found with me filming it was that I wasn't able to follow the actor as well as if he filmed it, so I decided to get him to hold the camera and I then guided him. I had to alter the light so it bounced off of the wall therefor making it less harsh and more subtle. making the light more natural ad realistic.  I had to change the positioning of the light overtime I moved the camera, this was so that there would be the same amount of light in every shot. For the close up shots I had to hold the camera which resulted in slight camera shake but I thought I would be able to edit it in premiere pro. For long shots I used a tripod which enable me to move the camera without causing camera shake. One thing I found when filming was that t...

Post production- Editing software

Image
The software which I am going to be using to edit my footage is Premier Pro. I am wanting to use this software because i am used to the layout and due to using it before I am almost familiar with what each tool does. Also with it being very popular there are loads of youtube tutorials on how to use it and I will then be able to learn some techniques which I will be able to incorporate into my own work. I could have used movie maker but I think that I would be limited to what I could do with the software even though it would have been easier to follow.

Storyboard

Image
When doing this storyboard I focussed on capturing exactly what I wanted for the main scenes of my film. They rant very good in quality but I did them in order for me to have something to follow when filming. I was expecting to take random shots when I was filming, normally when I'm filming I get inspired when I'm there in the setting.

Planning- casting

When choosing my actor to play Charlie I immediately thought of this actor who I had seen act in a short film Cargo Shorts which explores siblings reenacting their parents arguments. I thought he was the perfect person for the part so I decided to contact him asking whether he would be able to act in my short film. Due to his age I had to get consent from his mum, which was easy because I decided to cast her in my short film as well because when I met up with them to discuss the role I thought the connection that they had could be really effective in my short film so I decided to cast her.

Planning- Charlies costume

Image
Charlie's costume I am wanting the child to be in plain monochrome coloured clothes, this will them emphasise the repetition of blue throughout the short film. Due to my actor being the same age as my character I was thinking of using clothes he already has, the reason behind this is that I am wanting to highlight his age and gender and I thought the best way to do this is by using his own clothes. The shoes are going to be a natural colour, either black or brown I was thinking that these colours would be the most common colours. I am wanting the child to fit into the stereotypes of his age this is because I am wanting the audience to interpret that he is just a 'normal' child but then throughout the film the audience is shown certain aspects of his personality and certain actions which implies that he has autism. I am wanting either blue jeans or grey/black trousers, this is because this then fits in with the monochrome idea and highlights the simplicity of his outfi...

Location Recce- Charlie's Room

Image
Charlie's Room For Charlie's room I wanted to highlight the idea of repitition and structure this is because hone doing my research I noticed that people with autism are very logical and they almost want things to be simplistic and straight forward. I wanted to repeat a blue theme throughout his bedroom this is why I chose to have blue, stripy bedcovers and matching blind. I liked the idea of having stripes within his room because it creates the idea of normality which can be seen through these lines because they are straight and not confusing which again creates the idea of simplicity. When researching using the tv show Atypical I noticed the repetition of blue in his bedroom that is one of the reasons why I decided to include blue. Also within Atypical he has a fascination with penguins which can be seen in his room because he has posters and pictures. I thought very carefully when designing Charlie's room because I was wanted to recreate the same...

Planning- Mothers costume

Image
For the mothers costume I wanted to keep with the monochrome theme. I am wanting her to be wearing a white shirt, black jumper/cardigan, black jeans and black shoes.  I wanted the mum to be represented as a stereotypical person and 'normal'. I wanted to create this idea because I wanted to highlight that people who are effected by autism are no different and they shouldn't be seen as someone who should be pitied.  When researching autism I found out that people who have autism normally want situations to be simplistic, for example eating the same, specific food and doing the same things, by having the clothes monochrome allows me to emphasise this idea to the audience it also highlights how important it is and allows the audience to experience what someone with autism might experience. With Charlie mirroring what his mother is wearing almost creates the idea that even though he has autism he can still do things like follow in his mother footsteps not only her actions.
