Atypical analysis

Image
For some of my research I looked at a tv series called Atypical which is a Netflix original series. I wanted to use it as research for my short film, i looked at the types of clothing that he was wearing and what thing were are different when compared to a life of someone who isn't autistic. Some things that i had noticed when watching this series is that he wore very plain clothes and clothes that were bland in colour. He is also found to be wearing noise cancelling headphones which helps with the loud and annoying sounds which he finds irritating. You can also see the repetition within his life due to the amount of the same foods which are kept consistent throughout his day to day life. This highlights how his life needs to be in order for him to feel comfortable due to his autism, I would like to try and incorporate this into my short film. Another thing that i noticed when watching this tv series is that someone with autism require different things for example...

Experimental sounds

Image
I wanted to capture some sounds that i am wanting to use within my short film to create the intense sensitivity to certain sounds. These examples include the jingling of key and the sound of someone cracking their knuckles. These types of sounds are going to be intensified within the short film to highlight exactly what the character is experiencing. I am planning on running the sounds over the footage. I wanted to choose typical sounds that would be found in a stereotypical day. \these sounds are some ideas that i am thinking of using within my short film.

Planning- choosing a location

Image
For my short film i am wanting to use a public area so i can then focus on how busy and loud environments affect people with autism, i am wanting to choose one location for the whole duration of the short film. The locations which i have in mind are a shopping centre, a busy street, a park or a shop. These locations are stereotypically busy which suits my exception of my wanted location. By using a busy area I will be able to capture people's response for example them looking at the child. The sounds that I am wanting to highlight are things that would be found in these locations for example the sound of keys, a vibrating phone, someone chewing chewing gum, someone tapping their feet, the sound of someone take a photo. Depending whether I use a outside location of not will determine what sounds I'm will be wanting to emphasise. I also possibly want to emphasise certain colours that can be seen.

Planning- Choosing an idea

After i pitched both ideas to a small group of people i found that by the feedback my first idea which explores the idea of autism was the most unique idea. This is because my first idea is more interesting and more challenging which gives me a chance to experiment and explore different ways of filming and editing my footage. I am also very interested in doing some research about the idea and then incorporate it into the film. people also said that this idea was more original and different which also intrigued me to choose it. I also found that with my first idea i could explore the idea of mise-en-scene, and location a lot more allowing it to link with the narrative. I am also going to focus on the close up shots that i am wanting to capture to emphasise their reactions and irritation.

Planning- initial ideas

Initially i created 2 different ideas that i was interested in producing. One of them was a short film and the other one was a music video. I decided on creating 2 different ideas in order for me to have a choice between them and then i would be able to get other peoples opinions of which one they prefer. My first idea: For this idea i decided on a short film which explores the idea of autism and how it effects people. The short film follows a young child who suffers from autism the film highlights what troubles and scenarios that most effect someone with autism for example busy crowds and certain sounds.  The film also follows the childs reactions of these scenarios for example talking to themselves, being violent and being scared. The film is going to be set in a public area which is very familiar for example a shopping centre, a street or a park. My second idea: For my second idea i was planning on doing a music video which follows a teenager whose mother has passed ...

Research

Image
I found out that Sainsbury's were doing an autism hour which i found to be very interesting and I thought it would be very useful for research. I was wanting to go there during this hour and gather research about the atmosphere and the reactions that people had involving the changes. They said that they would be silencing the sound of the checkouts and the amount of tannoy's. I decided to ask the head of the store whether I was able to film within the store and he was happy to help the only thing that I needed to do was provide proof that it was for my film so I provided a letter which explained  my intentions. When experiencing this change I noticed how quiet the store was in a way that I didn't hear as much background noise. I can imagine how annoying the atmosphere of a typical supermarket would be for a autistic child and just by silencing certain sounds could change so much for someone. I could hardly hear the beeps from the tills which in itself made the store...

Moodboard

Image
All of the images on this mood board i am planning on incorporating into my product. For example the close up shots that i have included are what close up shots im going to try and include to show the emotion and reactions. Also the point of view shots i am anting to include are going to be of hands looking down. The setting for my short film will be in a public place for example a park, street or shopping centre. Some of the other photos arn't necessarily going to be used exactly in my product but there have influenced other ideas for my product.

Initial ideas group discussion

Image
Evaluation  For my idea i have decided to produce my short film idea due to the responses i got from the group discussion. The feedback told me that i had more of a understanding of my first idea and i could show my skills. People also said that the idea of my short film explores a subject which is unique and hasn't really been done before whereas my second idea was very cliche and wasn't really exciting and interesting. I also found that i was more excited to work on the short film over the music video. Due to this constructive criticism i have now decided to produce the short film which explores the idea of autism and how it effects certain people.

Planning- Introducing main task

Image
10. A short film in its entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action or animated or a combination of both, together with two of the following three options: a poster for a film a radio trailer for the film a film magazine review page featuring the film The OCR specification listed different choices we could explore ranging from a newspaper to a short film. Why have i chosen to produce a short film? I have chosen to produce a short film because last year me and my partner decided to produce a film opening which i found that limited the skill that we could show within our work because we were limited to the shots we could use.  Another reason why i have chosen to produce a short film is because ill be able to experiment with editing and the shots that i could use.  Which two options have i chosen to do? The reason why i have chosen to do a poster for my film is because it is something i have never done before and i wanted to see what...
