Films and artists are promoted in a range of ways, examples of this are the use of social media for interviews in which feature the artists or actors, conventions like comic con which allows the audience of the films to go and experience talks and interviews with the actors, merchandise is also another way of promoting the film/ artist, franchises which allows the film to be promoted through other films/media products, press releases and advertising campaigns can also be used to promote pieces of media. All of these techniques are used to advertise either a film or a album which therefore indices the target audience to watch or even buy the film/album. What the public normally gets from these methods of promotion are the dates of which the film/album is released and the cinematic release dates also the basic storyline and idea behind it. Films and albums could also be promoted through advertisements on billboards and film posters in the newspapers and magazines. In addition certain franchises also have their own magazine which are used to advertise upcoming films. There are also trailers which can be shown on IMDB or even on social media like Facebook or twitter in order for people to see what the film/album is about.
How has this changed in recent years?
Due to the increase of social media there has been an increase in the use of advertising that can be found on them. Also with social media being free it is a quick and easy way to promote and film/artist definitely if the media product is being produced by a independent company who don't have enough money to promote/advertise their media product professionally. Also due to the target audiences of modern media products are young and more interactive with social media and the internet it makes sense to advertise when you know your target audience is going to be. Depending on the target audience of your product depends on where you promote it, for example if your media product had a older target audience you wouldn't promote your film/artist on social media as much you would use billboards and newspapers and techniques which are more traditional.

You can see interviews from the actors/artists which are related to the media product, on social media along with images that explore the insides and out of the production allowing the film/album to be more personal for the audience. Also distributors are know to share clips that can be found either in the film or music video which shows the audience enough to get them enticed and want to watch the whole thing therefore marketing the media product. A traditional way of marketing a media product is by using posters which tells the target audience the most important information about the media product for example for a film it would show the release date, main actors, the director and a picture relating to the film some how. For a music video it would show the artist, what the album is called and the release date it is common for film posters to be more detailed whereas for a song the poster would stereotypically more simple.
