Non genre specific- Radioactive Imagine Dragons music video
One aspect of mine-en-scene that helps the audience identify the music video as being thriller/sci-fi is sound. The reoccurring sound of a boxing bell is heard creating the idea of a boxing match and therefore further implying that the music video is based around a underground fight club. This also infers that the genre is thriller/action because fighting is found to be a stereotype of both genres. The cheering that is found within the music video can also create the idea of an underground fight club therefore supporting the idea that it is a thriller/action/sci-fi genre. With the combination of both of these diagetic sounds the audience is made aware that the music video was made to create the idea of a thriller/action genre. When listening to the lyric you could also say that the word 'Radioactive' relates to war, fighting and finalisation. With this lyric the audience is made aware that the song relates to war and fighting and naturally/stereotypically the music video would to and therefore conforming to the stereotypes of a action/thriller genre.
Another aspect of mine-en-scene which is used to help the audience be aware of the music videos genre is camerawork which includes camera angles and camera movements. One camera angle which occurs regularly within the music video is a close up. Within a music video it is typical to find close ups of the artist/band when they are either playing a instrument or singing the lyrics which is seen at the beginning of the music video. The first shot that we see is a low angled shot which involves the camera being placed on the floor looking through the dead leaves on the floor at one of the characters. This shot is used like a establishing shot because you get shown the location which is a woodland that is very quiet. Within a lot of action/thriller films you get introduced to a lot of powerful characters which is implied by low/high camera angle. The same can be inferred by this camera angles because it is looking up at the character, even though she is far away from the camera the camera angle still implies that she is a powerful character because she is literally overpowering the camera. This camera angle tells the audience that she is a powerful character which is made aware to them at the end of the video where she saves the people. With the introduction of a powerful character the video conforms to some of the stereotypes of the thriller/action genre. The close up shots highlight the persons importance and to highlight their emotions which is used effectively when you see the leader of the fight club. He is introduced with a either level or low camera angles which highlight his power but then this is contrasted when he gets defeated at the end when a high camera angle is used to show his defeat. The use of these camera angles creates the idea of conflict and therefore showing the audience that it is a action/thriller genre.
The setting is also used to help the audience understand that is is a thriller/action genre. This is because the setting in the music video includes places with jail bars which highlights the idea that the band are being held prisoner, this creates the idea that the music video is a action/thriller genre because jails are normally associated with violence and danger which can be seen in this music video. The actual underground fight club also creates the idea of danger and violence because of the physical violence that is associated with the location. Another location that is scene in the music video is the forrest at the very beginning. This location further implies the idea that the fight club is hidden because there isn't anyone around and the forrest look abandoned; but this the audience is shown a bit of mystery and the idea of the unknown. A forest location is a stereotypical location that is found within a action/thriller genre.
The props that are used within this music video are also used to infer to the audience that the genre is action/thriller/sci-fi. This is because the teddy bears that are used are moving around like humans this creates the idea of the science fiction genre because the teddies are supernatural and not normal, they could also be seen as monsters. Another thing that suggests that it sci-fi is the lasers that are used by the bear at the end to destroy to men, they create the idea of deadly laser which can be seen in sci-fi movies like Star Trek and Star Wars. This is why I think this music video is part of the sci-fi genre also the aspect of editing can be related to my point due to the after effects that had to be used to creates the idea of the lasers. One thing that I saw within the music video that suggested to me that is was a music video was the use of guitars and drums. By the band using these props the audience knows that they are the band and it creates the idea of them performing the music live.
The lighting that is used in the music video is dim when focussing on the fighting scenes. This related to the thriller genre because dim lighting is stereotypically used in the fighting scenes to create suspense and to keep the audience on their toes because it is used to create confusion. There are spotlights which are used to highlight the fighting area and the teddies. There is also blue light which is used when the camera is focussed on the band, it think they have decided to do this because this lighting creates the idea of coldness and abandonment which highlights the idea that they are prisoners and therefore suggesting to the audience that is it a thriller/action genre.
