Atypical analysis

For some of my research I looked at a tv series called Atypical which is a Netflix original series. I wanted to use it as research for my short film, i looked at the types of clothing that he was wearing and what thing were are different when compared to a life of someone who isn't autistic.

Some things that i had noticed when watching this series is that he wore very plain clothes and clothes that were bland in colour. He is also found to be wearing noise cancelling headphones which helps with the loud and annoying sounds which he finds irritating.

You can also see the repetition within his life due to the amount of the same foods which are kept consistent throughout his day to day life. This highlights how his life needs to be in order for him to feel comfortable due to his autism, I would like to try and incorporate this into my short film.

Another thing that i noticed when watching this tv series is that someone with autism require different things for example specific washing powder and food.  I want to use this within my short film by including cut toast which is cut in a specific way.

When looking at this tv series I was able to look at how people with autism are represented through the media. People with autism are commonly represented as being anxious and socially awkward. In Atypical the main character really wants to have a girlfriend but due to his autism he doesn't  particularly like social situations which is what makes up relationships. Due to this the tv series explores him overcoming certain fears and requires him to step out of his comfort zone.
I also looked at the way that the tv series was filmed, what I mean by this is that I looked at what aspects of mise-en-scene which were used in order to highlight specific ideas. One thing I did notice was the repetition of the point of view shots that were used this created a dramatic effect to the audience, this is because it allows the audience to have a personal connection with the character because they are literally in their shoes. Another type of shot that was used is a close up shot. The reason why these shots were used was in order to highlight certain sounds and actions that might be seen as annoying to someone who has autism. By emphasising these the audience is experiencing exactly someone with autism is experiencing.
