Planning- Charlies costume
I am wanting the child to be in plain monochrome coloured clothes, this will them emphasise the repetition of blue throughout the short film. Due to my actor being the same age as my character I was thinking of using clothes he already has, the reason behind this is that I am wanting to highlight his age and gender and I thought the best way to do this is by using his own clothes. The shoes are going to be a natural colour, either black or brown I was thinking that these colours would be the most common colours. I am wanting the child to fit into the stereotypes of his age this is because I am wanting the audience to interpret that he is just a 'normal' child but then throughout the film the audience is shown certain aspects of his personality and certain actions which implies that he has autism. I am wanting either blue jeans or grey/black trousers, this is because this then fits in with the monochrome idea and highlights the simplicity of his outfit. For his jacket I am planning on getting him to wear a grey/black fleece of hoodie. With him wearing a hoodie or fleece he is conforming to the stereotype of the age and gender. The reason why I am wanting him to be wearing his jacket inside the house is because I am highlighting and emphasising his sensitivity to his surroundings and his sensitivity to touch, with him wearing his jacket inside implies that he could be sensitive to the cold or just the atmosphere in general. For his hair I am going to have him style it so it is perfectly placed and slick.
As you can see I followed the idea of having my costumes monochrome in colour, the clothes are very dark and plain apart from the slight bit of pattern on the top, the reason why I decided to have this was to highlight his age and create the idea to the audience that he is a child.
Due to the short film being set in the morning there is another costume that I am wanting to use within it, pyjamas. For my research I decided to look at Sheldon Cooper from the US tv series The Big Bang theory. Sheldon Cooper is famous for his tartan patterned pyjamas and robe, I liked the idea of of using almost adult pyjamas because I wanted to highlight that with some cases of autism they have advanced intelligence and react like adults. Sheldon Cooper is also represented as being very logical which I think can be seen through the patterns seen in the pyjamas this is one of the reasons why I wanted to use the same type of style of pyjamas.
When looking at the trousers that I decided to use for Charlie's pyjamas you can see that I have captured the tartan pattern and I decided to not have him wearing a dressing gown because as part of my research I wanted to know what the actor wore so I asked him if he wore a dressing gown and he said no so I decided no to include it for that reason. I am also going to get him wearing a plain top which fits into the monochrome idea.
