Evaluation Question 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Media Platforms
When comparing the media platforms I used to real media products you can see that I used the Youtube to present my final film which is the typical way that other short films have been presented. Vimeo is also used by filmmakers to upload and share their short films but due to my familiarity with youtube I decided to use that over Vimeo. By using Youtube my short film is easily accessible which results in it being easily viewed and therefore accessed. The people that use youtube are very diverse in a way that anyone can see my shortfall, including my target audience, people are able to view and comment their opinions on the short film which is why it is so effective.
Credits

Typically when watching short films it is introduced with the title for example in 'Don't look away'. The first thing you see is the title of the film, but in my film there isn't actually a title but it is included in the text at the end. Therefore my media product challenges the conventions of real media products when looking at credits. At the ed of the short film I have rolling credits which is a common convention of real media products which can also be seen in 'Don't look away'. I have followed this convention exactly by having white text on a black background. I also have text throughout my short film which isn't typically seen in short film which makes is so I challenge the conventions of short films. The reason why I wanted to both challenge and conform to the conventions is so that my media product would look both professional and unique.
Camera and editing
When filming my short film I referred back to the tv series 'Atypical' quite a lot because I found that the storylines of both media products were similar. Due to this tv series being so popular and successful I found it really effective using it as research and for inspiration. When researching Atypical I took note of the type of shots that I wanted to incorporate into my own media production.
For this short I used the same editing technique which was slow motion while the character was walking towards the camera, even though my shot is closer the scene is very similar.
For these shots you can see that I focussed a lot on the hands which is similar to the shot from Atypical because it is to focussing on the hands.
The element of drawing is similar between the two, there is a pan across a drawing in the introduction of atypical. This shot is similar to my pan of the superheroes at the end.
This shot focusses on the characters hair, it is a close up shot. I thought it was really effective which is why I decided to incorporate it into my own media product.
Mise-en-scene

For the mise-en-scene within my short film I also decided to take inspiration from the tv series Atypical. For this I wanted to focus on the colour blue within his room. Also when comparing my choice of location to other low budget productions you can see that there are very popular and simple locations. What I mean by this is that it is probably local so it doesn't take long to travel to, and it doesn't cost anything. Also there were no filming rights needed which was the case with my location. Due to the fact that I only filmed in one location it was able to conform to the conventions of real media products.
Narrative and Narrative Structure
The narrative structure of my short film isn't a typical structure as in it doesn't follow the equilibrium theory. This theory is a convention of most films/short films. I wanted to not follow this because I found that due to me wanting my short film to be informative that having this narrative structure wouldn't be most effective. My film didn't include a equilibrium, disequilibrium the a new equilibrium which means it doesn't follow the conventions of real media products. The increase of sounds could follow this, the reason why I think this is that there is a growing in sounds that infers that something is going to happen and then returns to normal which follows the structure of the equilibrium theory. So by doing this I was challenging the conventions of real media products.
