Theorists- relating to my media product
Levi Strauss's theory- binary opposites
Levi's theory explores the idea that a film contains binary opposites. What is meant by this is that aspects of the film are seen as complete opposites for example a hero and a villain, light and dark and good and evil. Within my short film you can see that this idea has been presented through the cleanliness and dirtiness. With a stereotype of an autistic person being that they are organised and clean, they don't like dirt and things that art in order, therefore the binary opposites theory has been presented.
Barthes- narrative codes
Barthes' theory emphasises the fact that the audience is given codes in which changes how they view the piece. For example one of the codes are enigma codes, these codes give the audience a puzzle to solve so if you compare this to my short film the audience is given hints about Charlie's life and his autism by factors which include clothing, props and setting, also by his actions and responses. There is also symbolic codes, these codes create symbols/signs that create meaning. For example when you look at my short film you see the reoccurrence of Spiderman throughout it allowing he audience to know that he is of some importance which is what I wanted to create. Another code is the referential code, this code allows the audience to view media with preconceptions based on their frame of reference, what I mean by frame of reference is that thought the media the images of stereotypes are created allowing us as a audience to always refer back to these stereotypes as guidelines. You can see this code in my short film by the boy being presented in a different way to the stereotype, but he then. conforms to certain aspects for example his love for superheroes. This os then contrasted by the cleanliness of his room and the way he presents himself.
Todorov- equilibrium theory
The equilibrium theory explores the idea that every film has a certain structure, equilibrium, disequilibrium and the new equilibrium. My short film subverts this theory, this is because it doesn't follow a structure almost a journey. There is no event in which makes it so there is a new equilibrium needed, it just follows Charlie's morning events. There is a climax within the music would could relate to this structure but regarding narrative my short film subverts this theory.
Stuart Hall- grammar of race theory
Halls theory explores the idea that audiences of the media blur together race and class, therefore associating a particular race with a particular class. He also said that ethnic minorities are represented as 'the other'. Hall outlines three base images of 'grammar of race' being the native, clown and the slave. This relates to my short film because my actors parents are from Trinidad and Tobago which makes him of a different race. My short film goes against the stereotypes of this theory because Charlie is neither presented as being the native, slave or clown. This shows a modern way of construction and representation within my media product.
